Definition

Zona pellucida is a specialized extracellular matrix that surrounds the plasma membrane of mammalian oocytes. It is required for successful fertilization. Zona pellucida allows species-specific fertilization, prevents polyspermy, and enables acrosomal reaction for the successful adhesion and penetration of the sperm cell.
